Quiznos Subs was one of my favorite sandwich shops. Their food was great and reasonably priced and at one point, they even looked like they could contend with Subway's popularity. Now they are seeing a sharp decline in sales and even filed for bankruptcy in July of 2014. So what happened? Bad marketing is what happened.
Several years ago, Quiznos' marketing department decided it would be a great idea to launch an ad campaign featuring deformed singing rodents called "spongmonkeys." These guys were ugly, annoying, and just plain creepy. This campaign has been labeled as one of the worst ad campaigns ever, which did not help their sales any. After this campaign launched, Quiznos saw a dramatic decline in sales.
Quiznos is trying to bounce back, though. Instead of making the same mistake, they are actually steering clear of television advertisements and going for other media platforms like print media and digital videos, with a higher emphasis on digital. Time will tell is this strategy will work in their favor.
What do you think? Should Quiznos try to go back to TV ads, or should they move on to more modern forms of advertising?
