Logos. We see them everyday - at the grocery store, on billboards on your way into town, in magazines at the bookstore. At the end of the day, we think we're done looking at them. You sit down with a snack, ready to wind down with your favorite TV show. While some shows rely on product placement (i.e. so and so works at Google, drinks Diet Coke), some shows have taken the extra creative step and actually create a fictional company. In some cases, these companies become part of the show's (or video game's) identity. These are my TOP 5 fictional company logos. I based these on their popularity with its corresponding show's audience, as well as it's impact on the show's story arc.
Number 5: Torchwood (Dr. Who)
Doo-wee-doooo!! Most Whovians (like myself) don't need that first sentence explained to us. We also know that the company Torchwood can be pretty sketchy at times. Their logo (shown below) is very recognizable in the Whovian community. It is also featured in the spinoff show (called Torchwood). I won't go too far into the company's history for fear of spoiling the show, but basically what Torchwoood does is capture "alien" technology brought about by The Doctor in his many adventures in hopes to study them and get a better understanding of just who (or what) The Doctor really is. Number
4: Massive Dynamic (Fringe)
Fringe is one of my most favorite shows ever! From the very first episode, the super-corporation known as Massive Dynamic is brought into the story and is part of every episode throughout the series' five seasons. Again, I won't go into deep details about the company in order to avoid spoilers. Massive Dynamic is a company that specializes in advancements in science and technology, but seem to always know more than they let on. Their logo definitely reflects the "massive" attitude the company tries to project itself as having.
Number 3: Aperture Science (Portal 1 and 2)
Okay, so this one doesn't belong in a TV show, but it does belong to one of the most popular video games around. Portal 1 and 2, developed by Valve, are puzzle games where the player must shoot "holes" known as portals, at the walls and floors in order to solve that level's puzzle. The player plays as a test subject employed by the science and technology company Aperture Science. In Portal 1, not much is known about the company. The player doesn't really get much background on the company until about the midpoint of the second game. In the second game, it is found out that Aperture Science developed the portal technology. They also started out manufacturing shower curtain rings, which accounts for their circular logo. Since shower curtain rings are round and aperture is another word for "hole", the company settled on this logo:
Number 2: Duff beer (The Simpsons)
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard of The Simpsons. The show is older than I am, but it has held a special place in my heart for as long as I can remember. One of Homer Simpson's favorite things other than donuts and sleeping, is Duff beer. Duff beer even has their own spokesman - Duff Man! The brand of beer is actually so popular with the show, it even exists outside of the cartoon world. That's right. You can buy your own Duff beer. The logo is pretty simple and does its job, which is a good thing. Logos shouldn't be very ornate and decorative.
Number 1: S.H.I.E.L.D. (Marvel Films, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
Marvel films seem to be all the rage now. The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor. The list goes on and on. Since the boom in popularity of these films, a spinoff show has spawned that is specifially about the company S.H.I.E.L.D. (called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). The logo is pretty cool, most of them showing the full acronym (Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate).
